5.01 New Student Registration Advisement

Upon completion of the ASSET test and orientation, or the COMPASS test, new students report to their advisor as indicated on the Student Advising Report.

Checklist for Registration Advisement of New Students

Introduce yourself. Explain to the student that you will be his advisor unless he changes his major.

Discuss the Student Advising Report with the student. Read the report.

Study the student's high school transcript and ACT Student Profile if available. If the student has failed to place into a course on the basis of the ASSET or COMPASS assessment , determine if he has made an acceptable score on the ACT test.

Complete a Course Recommendation Form. Keep one copy and give the other two copies to the student, one copy to keep and one to give to the schedule preparer. Keep the advisor copy of the Student Advising Report.

Give the student a copy of the Advisement Center brochure and direct him to the schedule preparer.

During pre-registration the advisor may also build the student's schedule if time is available.

Explain to the student the steps necessary to complete registration.

Give the Course Recommendation Form and the Student Advising Report to the Director of Advisement and Assessment to be placed in the student's advising file.
