Guidelines for reading/note taking:
 
1.  Organize your notes by dates ( in order to understand the timing/order of appearance of people/events)
 2. Note the important persons and events --how did the people affect the event, how did the event affect the people.
 3.  Where there is an outline on the topic page, it will  tell you what I consider to be the important persons/events of the topic. On other topic pages you must decide what is important. 
 4. Use the Response questions to guide your reading and note taking. Read through all the questions and then take each question to guide your reading and note taking. 
 5. Avoid selecting just two question and limiting reading to those two. 
 6. You will need to know information found in all of the readings for the exams, but the exams with be limited to the materials that you will read for the questions.

 After reading the materials  on the topic pages answer the Response Questions.

FORMAT OF THE RESPONSE QUESTION :

     1.The response will be a minimum of 200 words.
     2. Please write the question as the heading for your response and write your name on each page. 
     3. Your response should be double-spaced, using font size 10 or 12 ,using arial or other simple font.
     4. After using spell-check be sure to proof read your response before sending it.
     5. Be sure to save your work. 
     6. Remember your work should be done in Microsoft
Word or sent as a
Rich text fileMicrosoft Office 2007 – If you are using this new version of Word you may need to save your documents as Microsoft Office 2003 documents with the .doc rather than the .docx extension.  If you are using Microsoft Works or WordPerfect word processing program, save your file and change the “save file as” to Rich Text Format.  This will allow your document to be opened by your instructor using any word processing program.     
     7. Send your work as a single document in the WebCT Assignment link.
     8. There is  five (5) point penalty for late work.  Work will not be accepted two (2) days after the date due.

EVALUATION OF THE RESPONSE QUESTIONS:

1.  It will be graded upon the content ( your understanding of the question, your analysis and synthesis of the materials and discussion )
2.  It will be graded on the correct usage of the language (spelling, punctuation, grammar, mechanics).
3.  Each question is worth 20 points/40 points for the two.
4.  The grading standard for the correct usage of the language will be Edited American English (found below).

Select two of the following Response Questions: Due  Sept. 11 (Thurs. 12:00 noon)

   1.  Describe the major geographic regions of Arkansas: (be sure to include their geological development times/dates; discuss what these geographic differences meant in the development of the region { for example, mountains =difficulty of farming/heavily forested=timber}

     2.  Describe the Woodland Culture--religion, political organization, social organization, foods, tools and weapons.  What happened to these people.

     3.  Describe the Mississippian Culture--religion, political organization, social organization, foods, tools and weapons.  What happened to these people.

    4.   The Cahokia Mounds are a remarkable construction. Who were the people who constructed the mounds, what was their political organization, why were the mounds constructed, what happened to these people?

    5.    Describe the life of the Quapaw--political and social organization, religion, tools and weapons, foods.

    6.   Describe the life of the Caddo--political and social organization, religion, tools and weapons, foods.

    7.  Describe the influences of the Mississippian culture on the Quapaw and Caddo.

     8.  Describe the sites, types, builders, purposes of the various mounds found in Arkansas.

Grading Scale

Type I:  Gross Errors (-10 pts. each)

              A. fragment (ex.   Because I had a flat tire.)

              B. lack of subject/verb agreement (ex. The man were having a nervous breakdown.)

              C. fused/run-on sentence (ex. I had no choice I had to take the test.)

              D. incorrect tense or verb form (ex. The boy gone to the store for his father.)

Type II:  Major Errors (-5 pts. each)

              A. comma between subject and verb(comma fault) (ex. The mother,gave her son the apple.)

                 B. comma splice (ex. We went to the store,we  got some bread and milk.)

                 C. failure to show possession (ex. My husband pants are dirty.)

                  D. no indentation at beginning of paragraph and incorrect paragraph form.

Type III: Minor Errors ( -2 pts. each)

               A. misspelled words or incorrect capitalization

                B. misused homonyms or words used incorrectly

               C. commas added unnecessarily or commas lacking

               D. punctuation missing or incorrect

                E. incorrect pronoun agreement

               F. misleading pronoun reference

               G. unnecessary shift of tense or person

               H. words left out/dangling or misplaced modifiers.
