HISTORY OF ARKANSAS Hy 153This course will cover the history of Arkansas from prehistoric times to the present. This course will highlight significant periods and people of Arkansas. The student will be able to show their knowledge of people and events. The student will be able to show their understanding of causes and consequences of events. There is no text book for this class. The student must read all the materials that are found on the topic pages, there is also material that will be found in the library in the Arkansas History Quarterly . On-line classes offer the advantage of not having to attend class at a scheduled time three days a week. HOWEVER, on-line classes require a great deal more of the student’s time. The student must go to the various pages and read, the student must go to the numerous links that are found on each page and read the material on those links.( Some links can have as little as a paragraph or some links can consist of tens of pages). Not only must the student read the material, but the student will need to take notes from the materials read. Simply printing out the pages and links does the student no good. The material must be read, important facts recognized, links/connections between/among events and persons must be made. The student has to make those connections. The student can not wait until the night before the exam to begin reading the materials. There will be too much material to read the night before the exam. In addition, it is difficult to study materials that have only been read once. Some materials can only be found in the library so the student must have access to a Library in order to read those materials. Students who require considerable guidance from an instructor should reconsider taking a class on-line. The on-line class is designed for the student who is well-organized, manages their time, self-directed, capable of working alone with little instruction Evaluation: Based on Response Questions( 240 points) and Exams (300 points) Grading Scale: Exams and Response Questions

CLASS PARTICIPATION/Discussion Questions Questions will be posted on the WebCT Homepage discussion/bulletin board dealing with the readings. All students are expected to participate in the class discussion. Students should reply ( your reply may be brief or it may require more detail) to my questions as well as other students comments. Students should ask questions regarding the material as well. Remember this is our class discussion. Failure to respond to discussion questions on a regular basis ( at least every two/three days) is considered to be non-attendance of the class and the student can be removed from the class roll for excessive absences. The Discussion questions do not receive a grade but are an indicator of class participation and provide opportunity for student/teacher interaction and provide opportunity to consider various views on the topic, to raise questions about the materials. They can be a decider if a student's grade is borderline. Go to WebCT Homepage There you will find button for Arkansas History, on the Arkansas History page you will find button for communication tools, which will give you access to the Discussion/bulletin board, e-mail.
