CRITIQUE INFORMATION SHEET

Next to speaking, writing may well be the most significant learning experience in communication.  The purpose of this written assignment is to communicate ideas and information effectively.  It follows that an acceptable paper should have something significant to say and should say it clearly, accurately, convincingly and interestingly.

1.  You are required to attend The Aspects of Love.   The performances are February 14, and 15 at 7:30 p.m.  in the LILY PETER AUDITORIUM.  You must be on time and stay through the entire production.

2.  You must write a critique on the play.  This critique must be typed and will receive two grades: one for content and one for mechanics. The paper should be a minimum of 3 typed pages (double-spaced) and include a cover sheet. The information on the cover sheet should be centered and include Title, (underlined ) your name, course name,  instructor’s name, and the date.  It is due no later than Friday, February 22, and must include the following:

  1. An opening introductory paragraph which gets the readers attention and explains the purpose and content of the paper.  (Paragraph 1)
  1. Discuss the 3 levels of communication – write a detailed paragraph for each level, giving specific examples.  (Paragraphs 2, 3, and 4)
  1. Discuss the 4 forms of communication – write a detailed paragraph for each of the following forms, giving specific examples: (Paragraphs 5, 6, 7,  and 8)

1. Written Word

2.  Spoken Word

3.  Body Language (facial expressions, gestures, posture, eye contact)

4.  Codes, Symbols, and Signals

  1. Choose one of the following theatrical elements and explain how it communicates to you, the audience member, and how it contributes to the play.  Write a detailed descriptive paragraph giving specific examples to support your opinion. (par. 9)
    1. Scenery/setting – (mood, locale, time period)
    2. Costumes – (age, socioeconomic level, occupation, nationality, time)
    3. Lighting –  (mood, special effects, time of day)
  1. Choose two performers:  the most effective communicator and the least effective.  Explain your choices with specific support and examples. (paragraph 10)
  1. A closing paragraph - summarize your paper and end with a closing thought!
