The Complete Speaker.  Third edition, West Publishing Company, 1992.

Course Objectives:  Fundamentals of Speaking is a practical and general course designed for students who desire to improve their communication skills, speech proficiency, poise and self confidence in public speaking situations.  The course is designed to develop better intrapersonal and interpersonal communication skills and lead the potential speaker step-by-step from simple to relatively complex original speaking presentations.

Students who complete the required work will be prepared to achieve two major objectives: First, understand the principles of effective oral communication , and second, be able to apply these principles in actual speaking situations.  In the course the student will be asked to demonstrate:

  1. An understanding of basic speech communication models.

  2. The ability to apply listening skills that assist the communication process.

  3. The ability to apply principals of speech communication in planning and preparing a speech  for a specific audience and occasion. 

  4. The ability to organize ideas and information in a systematic and intelligible outline form.

  5. The role of vocal expression in the speech communication process.

  6. The correct use of verbal, non-verbal and visual supports for various types of speeches.

  7. An ability to critique various types of speeches (to inform, to persuade, etc.) according to accepted principals of speech communication.

  8. The ability to apply principals of communication to interpersonal/ group situations.

Grading:

The student will be evaluated on their success and effectiveness in meeting the following Requirements:

Three (3) written test taken from your textbook and lectures  20%
Presenting four (4) speeches  10%
Active participation in all class exercises and group projects  20%

Attendance at and written critique of Theatre Dept. Production  
( February 14, 15, 2002)

20%
Written assignments (4 speech outlines)    10%  
Final (written and oral) 20%

Attendance Policy:

Due to the nature of this class, attendance is of the utmost importance to observe and evaluate the speaking of others, and to profit form their experience and the comments of the instructor.  Three (3) absences will be allowed, thereafter, your grade will be lowered

one letter per each additional absence.  Certain situations, emergencies or medical conditions may be excused by the instructor; however, notification must be made before the class is missed.  If you are to miss class, please notify the instructor as soon as possible and remember, it is your responsibility to be prepared for any class assignments, test or speeches assigned during your absence.  You will not be allowed to make up any test or speech without prior consent of the instructor.
