On Oct. 15, over 200 first responders from the mid-south region visited our PCCUA emergency communications trailer during “Radio Day in the Park” held at the Olive Branch City Park. The Helena Amateur Radio Club demonstrated digital communications for use in case of local or nationwide natural disasters (tornadoes, floods, ice storms, hurricanes, etc.) along with passing notifications of health and welfare to loved ones outside the affected areas. This form of communication is most valuable when cellphone towers and the Internet go down and also plays a major role in FEMA plans and NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) operations. This emergency communications trailer serves the counties of Arkansas and Phillips. FCC licensing was available to attendees, as well as emergency training sessions.
