Sorenson selected Academic All-Star at PCCUA
Phillips Community College of the University of Arkansas (PCCUA) announces the selection of the student who represents the mark of excellence throughout its three-campus district. Attending classes on the Helena Campus, Winter Sorenson, of Lexa, has been named PCCUA’s new Academic All-Star.
This scholarship program is designed to honor excellence in academics and leadership. Sorenson will be honored among other All-Star students chosen to represent each two-year college within Arkansas Community Colleges. She will receive a $500 PCCUA scholarship for her final semester and will also have the opportunity to visit with Arkansas public four-year university representatives about potential scholarship offers to complete her bachelor’s degree.
In her life, Sorenson has experienced personal trials and discouragement, but has risen above it all and found new meaning and purpose through the financial support, services, training, and genuine concern provided by PCCUA.
Preparing to begin level three in the Associate Degree Nursing program on the Helena Campus this fall, Sorenson is a Warriors for Walt Scholarship recipient. She noted that when she started at PCCUA, she didn’t anticipate the amount of encouragement, love, and support that she would receive.
Sorenson plans to graduate with an A.A.S. degree in May, 2025, and transfer to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Her long-range plans include opening her own clinical practice that provides healthcare services at limited to no cost.
Sorenson is very grateful to PCCUA, because through this positive experience, she has gained confidence, stability, and ownership of a brighter future.
“Phillips Community College, I have learned what it is like to have my heart held. I have gained a friend, I have gained a vision, I have gained a life,” she said, adding, “Myself, my husband, my children, and even onward to their children thank you.”
To be eligible for Academic All-Star nomination, students must be currently enrolled in an Arkansas two-year college. To apply, the nominee must have completed at least 24 credit hours in pursuit of an associate degree. The student must also currently post a cumulative grade point average of not less than 3.25 out of a possible 4.0 in all credit coursework taken at that college. As part of the application process, students are also required to have letters of recommendation and write an essay.
