Phillips Community College of the University of Arkansas (PCCUA) recently received a touching letter from student Katie Abel, who shared how the college’s Associate Degree program transformed her high school years and shaped her future.

Through PCCUA’s concurrent enrollment opportunities, Katie earned 60 college credit hours while still in high school, a milestone she described as “one of the most rewarding experiences” of her academic journey. “This program gave me more than college hours,” Katie wrote. “It gave me mentors, challenges, motivation, and the reminder that hard work pays off.”

In her letter, Katie expressed gratitude to PCCUA professors and staff who made a lasting impact. Ms. Brown sparked her love for sociology and deepened her understanding of human behavior. Mr. Scott Guirem reignited her passion for writing through encouragement and creativity. Mr. Aaron Michael made government and politics engaging with humor and real-world connections. Mrs. Savanna supported her emotionally and academically, making her feel “like family.”

Katie also emphasized how the program set her ahead financially and academically, while also boosting her confidence. “The associate’s program is so much more than dual credit. It’s a launchpad for students who want to push themselves, get ahead, and grow personally and academically. PCCUA, thank you for everything you do to support students like me.”

Now preparing for the next steps in her college journey, Katie closed her letter with excitement for future Ridge Runners. “I cannot wait for the next generation of PCCUA students. Your kindness, generosity, and passion for education truly change lives, and I’m proud to say I was a part of this program.” PCCUA continues to expand dual enrollment opportunities through the Arkansas ACCESS Package, making stories like Katie’s possible for more students across the region.
